Cyber Matrix

Date of Completion:

Aug. 2025

Sheppard’s Business Interiors partnered with UNO on the Cyber Matrix project, located in the Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) building, supporting the university’s cutting-edge cybersecurity program. Designed for both bachelor’s and master’s degree students, including a Fast Track option, the space includes classrooms for hands-on learning and workrooms where master’s students assist local small businesses with cybersecurity assessments.

UNO’s Cyber Matrix program is recognized as one of only 20 institutions nationwide designated by the National Security Agency as a Center for Academic Excellence in Cyber Operations, emphasizing practical experience and industry relevance. In the capstone course, students work directly with real clients and systems, giving them a competitive edge while supporting the community.

SBI collaborated closely with the Dean’s office and faculty to furnish the Cyber Matrix, creating flexible, modern spaces that foster collaboration, learning, and innovation. The project was funded by the Weitz Family Foundation and completed in August 2025.

STEM TRAIL Center

Date of Completion:

2024

Partners:

UNO, Steelcase

The University of Nebraska Omaha’s (UNO) STEM TRAIL Center is a pioneering space where students engage in hands-on, problem-solving experiences. It provides an interdisciplinary, inclusive community for apprenticeships guided by faculty and industry professionals. The center’s design emphasizes flexible, dynamic learning environments that foster collaboration and innovation.

SBI helped bring this vision to life by providing adaptable, high-quality furniture for classrooms, collaborative spaces, meeting rooms, and offices. Moveable classroom furniture allows for easy reconfiguration for group work, workshops, and project-based learning, while collaborative areas support both large group activities and smaller breakout sessions. Every piece prioritizes flexibility, comfort, and mobility to enhance student-driven learning.

This project reflects a unique collaboration between UNO, SBI, and Steelcase, aimed at creating spaces that support both students and faculty. Classrooms were designed for interactive instruction, moving away from traditional lecture setups to encourage active participation.

Since opening, the STEM TRAIL Center has drawn local and national attention. Its inaugural “Aim for the Stars” program welcomed K-12 students from Omaha Public Schools, showcasing the center as a hub for educational innovation. Thoughtful furniture design and strategic collaboration have made it an inspiring environment where students can explore, collaborate, and innovate.

Criss Library

Date of Completion:

2019

UNO partnered with Sheppard’s Business Interiors to refresh key areas of the Criss Library as part of a multi‑year modernization effort. The university aimed to create a more welcoming, flexible environment that supports individual study, group collaboration, and student engagement. SBI assisted in exploring new design concepts, upgrading high‑traffic areas, and blending new furnishings with select existing pieces to maximize value while improving overall space utilization.

The first phase focused on the second floor — the library’s primary entry point and a highlight on campus tours. With updated seating options, study zones, and collaborative settings, the space now offers students greater choice in how and where they work. As future phases roll out, Criss Library continues evolving into a vibrant, student‑centered destination that enhances learning and enriches campus life.
